Ottery St. Mary – Otari

The twinning process between Ottery St. Mary and Otari happened very much by chance. A television programme about Otari was shown in Japan, and a person working at the British Embassy in Tokyo knew of the town in Devon of the same name.

Mediation began in earnest between the two towns, and in August 1991 a delegation visited Ottery St. Mary. The following May, a return delegation was made to Japan, and a friendship agreement was signed with the Mayor of Otari. Since then, a grassroots exchange with children and the inhabitants of both towns has taken place.

Ottery St. Mary is the birthplace of Coleridge and early British diplomat, Sir Ernest Mason Satow.
