Sheffield – Kawasaki
The steel industry has always been central to Sheffield’s success and indeed it was instrumental in the Industrial Revolution. Kawasaki is also an area of heavy industry, and these were the common links when twinning was first raised as a serious proposition. In July, 1990 the University of Sheffield’s School of East Asian Studies made the suggestion that the two cities could learn from each other as they regenerated following the collapse of the coal and steel industries and the consequent move towards the high-tech spectrum. International trade is the principal objective and each year the trade and exchange between the cities grows.
